MY STORY
Ever since I witnessed the dramatic healing effects of the first homeopathic medicine prescribed for my infant son, my course in life was set. I had to learn more so I could reduce suffering in this world.
I discovered homeopathy in 1981. My infant son had spiked a sudden high fever, and I was terrified that I was going to lose him. However, it turned out that his physician was trained in homeopathic medicine, and my little boy’s rapid response to the treatment brought his fever back to normal within minutes. The experience left me shaken and it altered the path of my life forever.
After my son’s recovery, I searched to learn more about homeopathy. Even though homeopathy was little known in the US at the time, I soon discovered that it was practiced widely in Europe, Asia, and South America, integrated into health care by practitioners in just about every branch of medicine-pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, respiratory, pulmonary and cardiac care, orthopedics, dermatology, general medicine, oncology and more. I learned that homeopathy is the mainstay of practice in many clinics and hospitals around the world. For many conditions, healing is swift and without side effects. Curative responses are seen for many conditions that do not have effective treatments in the world of conventional medicine.
My discoveries were startling and they fed my desire to learn more. I enrolled in chiropractic school to get a foundation in holistic health and then attended the New England School of Homeopathy and Hahnemann College of Homeopathy. I studied with respected homeopaths in Greece, England and India on every break I had and on every vacation.
Eventually, I set up a private practice in New York City. As interest in holistic medicine grew, I was invited to teach at hospitals in New York: Columbia Presbyterian, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the Hospital for Special Surgeries and Lenox Hill Hospital. When NYU established its Holistic Nursing program, my classes in homeopathy became a requirement for the advanced practice degree. Growing numbers of physicians and nurses were eager to learn how homeopathy could fill the gaps in medicine where conventional treatments had unwanted side effects or were unable to bring about healing.
At the time, less than 1% of the US population used homeopathy. That number is now close to 2%. And we are approaching a tipping point as research studies highlight the effectiveness of homeopathy for a growing number of physical and emotional complaints. Home use of homeopathic medicines for minor ailments is growing exponentially and the number of physicians and nurses enrolling in homeopathy training programs is soaring. I teach in many of these programs.
And I still see patients. Witnessing children and adults respond to homeopathy after years of disappointing medical treatments is a source of continued joy.
Supporting healthcare providers with online webinars, conference presentations, and published articles adds to the meaning I find in my work. When a physician writes to me to say, “I enjoy my work more than ever before – Homeopathy heals. Homeopathy changes lives,” the journey that started with my son’s fever takes on even more meaning. We live in stressful times, and I am infinitely grateful to have skills to share that can ease the struggles that so many people face.
